Biography

Melanie has an Honours Degree in Design from Glasgow School of Art. Following graduation she moved into retail sales in London, where she became manager of the Yves Saint Laurent shop and then took up a position as London Directrice of Tan Giudicelli, a Paris based couture designer. Following a move to Australia, she worked as a Sales and Marketing Executive for a department store chain and was the Marketing Manager of Brisbane city fashion centre, The Wintergarden, which included over 140 tenants. Melanie then became the Marketing Communications Manager of Hyatt Regency Coolum, a large, award winning five star resort on the Sunshine Coast. She left Hyatt to create her own Marketing Communications consultancy, with clients including Queensland Ballet, Queensland Performing Arts Complex, five star resorts and hotels and award winning restaurants amongst many others.

Upon her return to the Scottish Highlands, she opened her own antiques and fine crafts shop and then became a professional china restorer, before returning to a more directly creative path, with the launch of Melanie Muir Jewellery Design in 2009.

Since then, she has exhibited her work around the world, winning a Silver Medal in the UK Craft & Design “Selected” awards in 2010 and Gold and Silver in “Bead Dreams” International Competition USA 2012 and Gold in 2013.

She has been selected for prestigious shows such as American Craft Council Baltimore 2017, London Design Fair 2016, SOFA Chicago 2015, “Bijoux”, West Palm Beach 2016/17, “Converge” 2016 at National Gallery of Scotland (Edinburgh) and her work has been exhibited in the National Museum of Scotland (Edinburgh), Leeds City Art Gallery, Wolverhampton Art Gallery, The Barony Centre (Scotland), Ferrers Gallery (England), Craft Central (London), Laing Art Gallery (England) and many more.

Melanie’s designs have been featured in numerous internet blogs/articles and in Crafts magazine UK, Craft & Design magazine UK, The Scotsman newspaper, Art Jewellery magazine and Making Jewellery magazine. Her work is published in “500 necklaces” (Lark Books), “Polymer Clay Global Perspectives” and “Polymer Clay Jewellery Workshop”.

She has created her own range of tools which sell to makers and crafters all over the world. Melanie has also coached, lectured and mentored in the fields of entrepreneurship, creative business operations and marketing.

She has three adult children and lives in Nairn, near Inverness in Scotland, from where she has travelled widely to exhibit, lecture and teach her techniques.
